Understanding Camera Flash

Instructor : Yiannis Rizomarkos

If you’ve heard a photographer say “I never use flash, I only use available light”, they probably mean “I have no idea how this thing works!”. The seminar is about understanding and creative use of the camera’s portable flash and its accessories. Students are taught hands-on the best way to use it and how to expand the lighting possibilities by combining multiple portable flash systems.

Starting with on-camera flash, the instructor will analyze the various exposure settings, automatic and manual control, first and second curtain synchronization, high speeds for action photography and demonstrate techniques for direct, diffuse and bounce lighting. Then with off-camera flash, participants learn the techniques of remote firing, the use of multiple wireless flashes, while the instructor will also touch on impressive strobe lighting. During the seminar, students will have the opportunity to practice and assimilate what they learned in theory while simultaneously developing their skills to use flash creatively and with the use of their imagination.

The course is aimed at beginners and advanced photographers, especially those who use flash professionally, but also those who realize that it can significantly improve their shots. Participants should bring their own flash and batteries. The school provides additional photographic equipment for display and use.
