The Decisive Moment
Photographic wandering and searching, expecting the unexpected, could be the definition of street photography. Every moment is an opportunity to create meaning, humor and details of everyday life in a photograph that echoes the history of urban life. In this hands-on seminar, participants will look for these unique moments by learning to look beyond the ordinary.
On the first day of the class, students will be inspired by photos from both the lecturer and well-known photographers, given advice and properly prepare their cameras with suggested settings for successful shots. In the next two, they will go out into the streets and, under the guidance of Andreas Kamoutsis, they will be taught ways to practice their observation and experiment with different approaches. At the same time, they will learn to overcome the hesitations and concerns that may prevent them from approaching strangers and reach the image they want more effectively. Most of the final session will involve extensive analysis and commentary of participants’ work, emphasizing aesthetic and technical issues, so that everyone can lay the groundwork to take their photography to the next level.
The course is aimed at anyone interested in photography, specifically street photography. Beginners with basic camera knowledge and more experienced photographers are welcome, but hopefully some names like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Garry Winogrand or Alex Webb will have some meaning and be recognizable to those interested.
